IUDs are small, T-shaped devices that are placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two types of IUDs: hormonal and non-hormonal. Hormonal IUDs released small amounts of the hormone progestin, which thickens the cervical mucus and thins the lining of the uterus—making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg and fertilize it. Non-hormonal IUDs contain copper, which is toxic to sperm. The ParaGard IUD belongs to the latter category.
